My PhD work was originally focused on using robots as platforms for our fish-tagging research: Gray’s Reef staff would catch and implant “tags”, small instruments that send high-frequency signals to be detected by the glider, moored instruments, boats, whatever works. These signals help biologists, fisheries managers, and researchers track fish movements, BUT the environment can dramatically change when and where we can detect these transmissions. That means that, even if a tagged fish is near one of our receivers there is never a guarantee that we detect it. Like many other scientific questions, the answer rests on “it depends”.
